What are cookies?

Cookies are files stored on your computer or mobile device which are used to make websites work and/or to collect information about your navigation.

A cookie can be classified by its lifespan and the domain to which it belongs. By lifespan, a cookie is either a:

  • Session cookie which is erased when the user closes the browser or
  • Persistent cookie which remains on the user's computer/device for a pre-defined period of time

As for the domain to which it belongs, they are either:

  • First-party cookies which are set by the web server of the visited page and share the same domain
  • Third-party cookies stored by a different domain to the visited page's domain. This can happen when the webpage references a file, such as JavaScript, located outside its domain

Besides these characteristics relating to their functioning, cookies are generally allocated into four categories relating to their object:

  • Essential cookies are necessary for the site to work and enable you to move around it or to use its services and features (session-id, authenthication, security, multimedia content player, load balancing, language or privacy preferences, etc.)
  • Analytics cookies collect information about use of the site by visitors (for example which are the most frequently visited pages on the site) and enable to improve the way it works
  • Advertising cookies are used to understand your browsing habits and activity and can be used for profiling purposes in order to show you targeted/personalised marketing content
  • Social networks cookies are used to track members and non-members of social media networks for market research analytics and product development

At any time after giving consent to cookies, you may revoke it in the Privacy Center.
To revoke your consent globally for behavioural advertising, you may also visit: Your Online Choices.
You can also set most browsers to prevent cookies from being placed by following these instructions. If you do this, however, you may have to manually adjust some preferences every time you visit a site and some services and functionalities may not work.
